Watching Out for Poor Vision

In patients, whether young or old, sometimes poor vision can be the result of a number of factors including anatomical changes in the eye, eye diseases, side effects of medication or injury. Commonly, people also suffer from visual disturbances due to aging or eye strain. This can cause changes in your vision, which may sometimes cause discomfort and even make it harder to get through normal activities, like reading fine print or using a computer for long periods. These vision problems can be expressed via the following symptoms: eye strain, headache, blurred vision, and struggling with short or long distances.

One of the most common signs of a vision problem can be blurred vision. If you suffer from blurred vision when focusing on faraway objects or signs, you may very well be myopic or nearsighted. If you have blurred vision when you're viewing anything close by it may be a sign of hyperopia, or farsightedness. It can also mean you have astigmatism because of an irregularity in the shape of the cornea, or sometimes the curvature of the lens inside the eye. Whatever the cause of blurry vision, it's essential that an eye doctor examine your eyes and decide on the most effective way to rectify your sight.

Another common indicator of a vision problem is trouble distinguishing different colors or strength of color. This is an indication of a problem perceiving color, or color blindness. Interestingly, this condition is generally not known to the patient until diagnosed with a test. Color blindness is generally something that affects males. If present in a female it could mean she has ocular disease, and an eye doctor needs to be consulted. For those who struggle to distinguish between objects in minimal light, it could mean the patient suffers from night blindness.

Cataracts, a condition commonly found in aging people have a number of telltale signs which include: blurry sight that weakens in bright light, trouble seeing in the dark or reduced light, difficulty discerning small writing or objects, muted or faded colors, seeing duplicates in one eye, redness around the eye, and a pale appearance to the usually dark pupil.

Throbbing eye pain, headaches, blurry sight, inflammation in the eye, colorful halos around lights, nausea and vomiting are also signs of glaucoma, a severe medical condition, which needs prompt medical attention.

When it comes to children, it's useful to watch for uncoordinated eye movement, or eyes that cross in or out, which may indicate a condition known as strabismus. Some behavior, like rubbing eyes frequently, squinting, head tilting, or needing to shut one eye to focus better, can often point to strabismus.

If you have any of the symptoms listed here, see your eye doctor promptly. Though some conditions may be more severe than others, anything that limits good eyesight can be something that really affects your quality of life. A quick visit to your optometrist can save you from unnecessary discomfort, or further eye and vision problems.
