Astigmatism Diagnosis & Treatment

Astigmatism

We Provide Precise Astigmatism Eye Exams

Most people have heard the term astigmatism, but are not fully certain what it is. What type of vision condition is this – how is it diagnosed, and how is it treated?

Your eye doctors at Fox Eye Care are highly skilled and experienced in diagnosing and treating astigmatism, which is very common. In fact, astigmatism is so common that it is present in almost everyone, but it only leads to blurred or distorted vision when it reaches a certain degree. To learn more about the details of this vision condition, our astigmatism eye doctor explains:

Definition of Astigmatism

Normally, the eyeball is shaped like a spherical ball. Sometimes, the shape changes into more of an ellipse, similar to a football shape. When this occurs, the light that enters your eye does not bend evenly. As a result, only one part of every image you see is conveyed clearly onto the tissues at the back of your inner eye. Only that part of the picture is therefore in focus at one time. The rest of the image will be blurry.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

When this vision condition is not detected by an astigmatism eye exam (or it is left untreated), the symptoms include wavy or fuzzy vision. At any distance, you will see objects distorted and you will not be able to bring them into sharp focus. Sometimes, astigmatism is blamed incorrectly on eye strain or fatigue. It is a mistake to make this conclusion without a comprehensive eye exam by an astigmatism eye doctor! Only a thorough examination can determine the problem; contact our office to book your appointment.

Astigmatism Treatment

For the vast majority of people with astigmatism, prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses will resolve the problem. However, if these forms of vision correction do not do the trick, surgery is sometimes necessary.

Astigmatism often occurs along with other vision conditions, such as hyperopia (farsightedness) and myopia (nearsightedness). When our eye doctor performs your astigmatism eye exam, we will make sure that your vision prescription corrects all types of refractive error.

Visit Regularly for an Astigmatism Eye Exam

With time, astigmatism tends to worsen, which is why regular eye exams are so essential. Watch out for any changes, and if your vision becomes blurry again before your annual visit to the eye doctor, call to book an appointment. We will conduct vision testing to see if your prescription has changed.

Sports eyewear can give you the performance edge you're seeking for just about any sport.
